Reduction Mammoplasty
Heavy, pendulous breasts are often a source of chronic
pain and discomfort for many women. Although
women may request reduction mammoplasty to relieve
pain and discomfort, many also hope that the
procedure will improve their appearance. Breast reduction eliminates the physical and emotional discomforts of oversized breasts and results in a better proportioned body contour. Breast reduction is usually performed once a woman's breasts are fully developed. However, it can be done earlier if the patient is experiencing serious physical discomfort.

New developments in breast reduction surgery include the limited incision techniques, including the LeJour technique and the use of liposculpture for artistic shaping of the breast.

Methods
There are several methods of breast reduction, such as the vertical breast reduction method which result in significantly less scarring than traditional techniques, and which leave a better breast shape. |
 |
Why People do it
Breast reduction is usually performed for enlarged breasts (macromastia), but may also be indicated by:
- cystic breast infections (polycystic mastitis)
back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, breast pain, or headaches
- loss of sensation in the breasts, arms, or fingers
sleeping problems or poor posture resulting from large breasts
- pigmented bra-strap groove
striae (scarlike lines) on the breasts

Info on the side
The dressing is replaced by a soft bra within the first week, and it must be worn for several weeks. Generally, the swelling and discoloration around the incisions subside within a few days. There may be temporary loss of sensation in the breast skin and nipples after surgery. This condition improves with time. Within two weeks of surgery, stitches (sutures) are removed.
After surgery, a bulky gauze dressing is wrapped around the breasts and chest. Sometimes a surgical bra is used. Pain is controlled by medication, and usually subsides in a day or two. Most patients stay in the hospital for two days.
